Cosart Subject Of MLB Grambling Probe

Mar 25, 2015 4:11 PM

Major League Baseball is looking into possible sports-related gambling ties involving Miami Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart, a league official has confirmed.

Cosart, 24, allegedly exchanged multiple direct messages with a gambling authority on his Twitter account, and the interaction became public.

The pitcher deleted his official Twitter account after screen shots of the exchange began appearing on the Internet on Tuesday night.

It's unclear whether the allegations involving Cosart revolve around baseball betting or sports betting in general. MLB Rule 21 prohibits gambling on baseball.

Clayton Kershaw Survives Major Scare

Mar 22, 2015 7:25 PM

The Dodgers survived a major scare Friday when Clayton Kershaw was struck in the face by a line drive in a spring training game against the A's.

Kershaw collapsed on the mound after Andy Parrino's broken-bat liner struck him. The left-hander sat there for a minute or two as Dodgers trainers and manager Don Mattingly rushed out of the dugout, but after working his jaw a few times and consulting with trainer Stan Conte, Kershaw threw a warm-up pitch and remained in the game.

Kershaw said he lost part of a tooth, but was otherwise unharmed. He got through his five scheduled innings, striking out four batters and allowing one run, then threw more pitches in the bullpen.

Jon Lester Sharp In Spring Debut For Cubs

Mar 8, 2015 7:58 PM

In front of the largest spring training crowd ever on Friday, new Cubs pitcher Jon Lester threw as advertised, facing the minimum in his two-inning debut in a Cubs uniform.

Lester got ahead of all but one Reds batter while striking out three in front of 15,331. He gave up one hit, a broken-bat single to Chris Dominguez in the second inning, which was erased by a double-play ball. Lester threw so efficiently he wrapped up his day with a few more tosses in the bullpen.

Mets' ace Matt Harvey retired all six Tigers batters he faced and topped out at 99 mph with his fastball on Friday at Tradition Field. It marked Harvey's first game since Aug. 24, 2013. He underwent Tommy John surgery two months later and missed all of last season.

"Things felt so good that the fact that I did have surgery is completely out of my mind," Harvey said.
